How to Paint Panel Bi-fold Doors

Bi-fold doors can make effective and attractive doors on interior doorways, folding in half to open and then unfolding to cover the doorway. If you need to paint panel bi-fold doors, use care to prepare the door surfaces before you apply paint. Make sure that every surface of the doors will have a layer of paint, remembering that as the doors fold to open, inner edges will be visible.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove door hardware by unscrewing it with the screwdriver.

    • 2

Spread the drop cloth under your work area. Place the two sawhorses over the drop cloth to hold the closet doors while you work on them.

    • 3

Remove the bi-fold doors from the tracks by pressing the pivot on the bottom of the doors and pulling the doors off the tracks. Place the doors horizontally onto the sawhorses.

    • 4

Sand the surfaces of the doors lightly with the sandpaper. Rub the sandpaper over the front and back surfaces of the doors. Fold the doors in half and sand the narrow side edges evenly. Wipe down the sanded surfaces carefully with the tack cloth to remove dust.

    • 5

Load the paintbrush with the latex primer and apply the primer evenly over the front and back surfaces of the doors. Brush the paintbrush in vertical movements to apply the primer, removing excess primer with the brush, when necessary. Press the bristles of the paintbrush firmly into the crevices of the panels to ensure that you cover the door surfaces thoroughly. Allow the primer to dry completely. Fold the doors in half and apply primer to the narrow edges of the doors. Allow the primer to dry completely.

    • 6

Load the paintbrush with latex paint and apply the paint using the same method you used to apply the primer. Allow the paint to dry completely and apply a second coat of paint. Allow the second coat of paint to dry completely.

    • 7

Place the door hardware back into the doors and secure it tightly with the screwdriver. Reinstall the doors into the tracks.
