Painting Over Enamel Stoneware

After clay pottery undergoes a vitrification process, during which its heated at a high temperature and then cooled, the pottery becomes a ceramic material. Ceramic pieces heated to a lower temperature become stoneware. Stoneware items with an opaque glaze are enamel pieces, often used for vases, bowls and other home decor. When you wish to paint over enamel stoneware, use the proper acrylic enamel paint that will adhere effectively to the nonporous surface of the stoneware.

Instructions

Sand the surfaces of the stoneware lightly with the fine sandpaper to give it a slightly rough finish. Sand the inner surfaces of the piece if you can reach them. Wipe off the sanded surfaces of the stoneware thoroughly with the tack cloth to remove all dust.

Spray the degreaser spray over the inner and outer surfaces of the stoneware to clean them. Wipe off the spray with the cloth to dry the item completely.

    • 3

Load the paintbrush with the acrylic enamel paint and apply the paint over the stoneware piece in a thin layer. Work carefully to ensure that you keep the paint even over the entire surface of the stoneware, including inner surfaces (if applicable), coating the surfaces completely. Allow the stoneware to dry for at least eight hours.

Apply a second coat of the acrylic enamel paint over the stoneware to achieve more even and flawless paint coverage. Allow the paint to dry for at least 72 hours before touching the stoneware.
