How to Decorate Using Only Side Drapes at a Window

It isn't necessary to use cornices or heavy valances to adorn your windows. Decorating them successfully with only side drapes is possible if you use the right colors and embellishments. Side drapes enable you to draw attention to a breathtaking view outside a large window or to minimize the area. Heavy or custom made draperies are often expensive or an arduous project to hang properly. Using only side drapes enables you to make the most of the area in a simplified manner.

Instructions

    • 1

Install a decorative curtain rod that extends beyond the side drapes. These rods sit on standard curtain brackets, yet add style to the window treatment. These are much more attractive with side drapes than a standard metal rod.

    • 2

Add side drapes that closely match the color of the walls if you don't want to draw attention to the window, but still need lighting from the area.

    • 3

Hang side drapes in one of the accent colors in the room. Use a color that is not the same shade as the wall paint. This attracts the eye to the area and helps draw attention to a beautiful view. Another option is to choose curtain drapes that have a bold stripe of color at the top. This creates the illusion of extra height near the window by drawing the eye upward. This is an effective way to draw attention to detailed crown molding or art above the window.

Add a romantic appeal to the room by installing extra long drapes that puddle on the floor.

    • 5

Mount curtain sconces or scarf holders with hooks on either side of your window. Drape a curtain scarf over the hook with both ends even or staggered at different heights to create interest. Looping the scarf around the curtain sconces and tying a loose knot is another attractive way to use these as side drapes.

Hang a bell pull or a narrow tapestry on either side of the window to add interest and texture. This creates the look of draperies without the bulk and hardware.

Utilize decorative tie backs for the side drapes. If the room contains a country style, fluffy bows are appropriate or twine with a pair of painted wood hearts or other embellishments attached. Tassels and many other types of tie backs are available to enhance any style decor.
