How to Hide a Breaker Panel in a Finished Basement

Breaker panels provide vital access to elements that control the electricity in your home. Having access to these breakers is important, but the typical gray metal from which the access door is made is not often attractive. If you have a finished basement, concealing the breaker panel leads to a space that appears more aesthetically pleasing.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint the breaker box in a color that matches the wall. Use the exact same paint type if possible. This provides a low-cost and fast solution for camouflaging it from view.

    • 2

Hang a picture frame that’s large enough to cover the whole breaker panel. Locate a wall stud on either side of the panel and install two picture hooks. Stick to a lightweight frame that’s easy to remove when you need access.

    • 3

Install a paper or cardboard picture or poster directly over the panel box using sticky tack for a lightweight, low-cost hiding solution for the box.

    • 4

Glue magnetic strips to the back of a poster board or bulletin board decorated in the method of your choice. Hang by sticking the strips directly onto the breaker panel box.

    • 5

Mount a curtain rod across the breaker panel. Hang a curtain on the rod that you can pull over to hide it or move out of the way when access is needed. Match the curtains to any others you may have in the basement.

    • 6

Cover the breaker panel with items that stick directly to it. Create a collage with vinyl wall clings. Fill it with stickers for something more permanent. Arrange a magnet collection across the panel.
