How to Clean a Galvanized Tin Water Can

An old tin water can may exude quaint and old-fashioned charm. When the tin has a galvanized surface, it has a zinc coating applied over the surface to help keep the metal from rusting. If you do not keep a coat of paint over the surface, the zinc coating will wear off and the tin beneath will begin rusting. Use a strong mixture to clean a galvanized tin water can.

  • Bucket

Instructions

    • 1

Measure and mix 2.5 ounces of TSP and 1 gallon of hot water in the bucket. Mix the ingredients well.

    • 2

Wear plastic gloves and dip the old toothbrush into the cleaning mixture. Apply the TSP to the galvanized tin to wash it. Scrub every surface of the water can with the toothbrush to clean it thoroughly. Rinse the water can after you finish washing it. Dry the water can well with the old towel.

    • 3

Sand the surfaces of the water can with the sandpaper to give it a slightly scuffed texture. This will help the primer and paint adhere more effectively. Wipe the surfaces carefully with the tack cloth.

    • 4

Place the water can on the plastic tarp to protect surrounding areas from overspray.

    • 5

Shake the aluminum spray primer can vigorously for at least three minutes. Hold the spray can about 12 inches away from the water can and spray the primer evenly over the surface to coat it. Do not spray to the point of the primer dripping from the surface. Allow the primer to dry for about 10 minutes.

Shake the enamel spray paint using the same method you used for the primer. Hold the can about 12 inches away from the water can and coat the can evenly with the enamel spray paint. Allow the paint to dry for about 10 minutes and apply a second coat.
