DIY River Rock Floor

When you are refinishing your floor, look beyond the standard flooring materials found at a home improvement store. Consider covering your floor with materials you collect in nature. For example, collect smooth, flat river rocks to create a floor with a beautiful tile-like appearance. You can customize the look of the river rock floor using different shades of rocks.

Instructions

    • 1

Sand the entire surface of the floor using a floor sander with a medium-grain sanding ring. This removes any roughness or jagged patches and creates an even layer on which to spread the grout for the floor. Continue sanding until the floor is even and smooth.

    • 2

Vacuum the floor with a shop vacuum until you have removed all the dirt, dust and debris.

    • 3

Spread a 1-inch-thick layer of medium grout over the surface of the floor using a trowel. Apply the grout in an even layer.

    • 4

Press flat, smooth river rocks halfway into the grout, positioning the rocks 1/8 inch apart from each other. Use rocks that are all smooth and roughly the same depth so that the floor is as even as possible.

    • 5

Cover the river rock floor with a 1/2-inch layer of grout, then wipe the grout off the top of each river rock using a washcloth. Allow the grout in between the rocks to remain.

    • 6

Run your finger along the edges in between the rocks to smooth down the grout.

    • 7

Allow the floor to air dry for 12 to 18 hours.

    • 8

Fill a paint tray with clear, matte floor sealant. Coat a long-handled paint roller with the floor sealant.

    • 9

Roll the sealant over the entire river rock floor in an even layer. Allow the sealant to air dry for 12 hours before walking on the floor.
