Ideas on How to Decorate a Split Foyer & Living Room

Decorating a split foyer that leads to a living room isn't a challenge if you use decor that provides continuity throughout both rooms. This type of entryway is often found in homes containing small foyers with steps leading up and down to different levels of the home. The living room area often is bordered by rails that allow people upstairs in the living room to see into the foyer and vice versa.

Instructions

    • 1

Cover the walls in the split foyer with a latex paint that flows into the color in the living room. For instance, if the living room has a pale blue paint, use a slightly darker blue in the foyer or a silvery gray.

    • 2

Hang wall decor in the split foyer that has the same theme and style as the living room. For example, if your living room is Victorian, hanging Victorian wall sconces, Victorian wall art and other Victorian decor in your split foyer will accentuate the look. Select pictures and other wall art that are narrow and hang vertically if the foyer is a cramped space, but utilize larger wall decor with the same theme in the living room area.

    • 3

Install the same type of flooring in the split foyer and the living room to provide continuity in the space. Using the same or similar wall paint and flooring makes the two areas seem to flow together.

    • 4

Utilize similar wood tones that are on the railing along the steps with any wood decor in both rooms. For instance, if the railings are a dark maple, incorporate this in any wood picture frames or furniture in the two spaces.

    • 5

Add interest to the split foyer by including a slim floor lamp with an old-fashioned beaded shade, a tall, slender potted plant or a narrow etagere. Small, yet decorative furnishings create a big impact in this space.

Mount a lighting fixture in the split foyer that complements the theme in the living room area. A small chandelier is appropriate if you have a living room that is formal in style. A beaded light fixture works well if you enjoy art decor or bohemian styles. Adequate lighting is a necessity in this space because of the stairs.
