Taking Wallpaper Off an Unprimed Wall

If you have an unprimed wall with old wallpaper on it, then you may want to remove the wallpaper. Removing wallpaper is fairly easy using a chemical wallpaper removing process. However, if you have an unprimed surface beneath the wallpaper -- such as drywall -- then you should avoid a chemical remover because it will damage an already vulnerable surface. Instead, use water.

Instructions

    • 1

Line your floors with painter's drop cloths.

    • 2

Pull off the top layer of wallpaper in long sheets. If the wallpaper does not pull off easily, spray it with water.

    • 3

Fill a compression sprayer with water -- you can rent these from your local home construction supply store -- and spray the wall with water from the top of the wall. Allow the water to run down the wall and soak for about 15 minutes.

Gently scrape away the wet paper -- which is a remnant of the wallpaper -- with a putty knife. Slip the putty knife behind the wet paper and lift it off the wall.
