How to Paint to Match Swirled Ceilings

If you have a ceiling with a swirled design featuring different colors of paint and you would like to limit the paint swirl color to one hue alone, then you will need to match the paint of your choice to the paint on the ceiling in order to get a uniform look. Use paint color swatches to find the hue closest to the main color you like on the ceiling.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit your local home construction supply store or your local paint store and pick up several paint swatch cards featuring paint colors in the general family of the ceiling swirl hue you would like to paint on all of the swirls on the ceiling.

    • 2

Place a step ladder above the ceiling swirl in the color that you would like to match.

    • 3

Ask an assistant to hold the ladder base as you climb up the side of the step ladder.

    • 4

Place the color swatches against the ceiling swirl in the color you would like to mimic. Test several different swatch colors against the ceiling swirls to find the best match.

    • 5

Order the custom paint from your local paint store.

    • 6

Spread a drop cloth across your floor to catch dripping paint.

    • 7

Open the paint can, mix it with a paint stick and dip a trim brush into the paint. A trim brush is a good brush to use when painting swirls, as this brush is angled and will help you follow the curved angles of the ceiling swirls. Paint over the swirls using your matched paint.
