How to Use a Chandelier Canopy

Turn off the power for the area in which you'll be working in your home by turning off the appropriate fuse or circuit breaker.

Unscrew the screws in the old ceiling fixture with a screwdriver. Gently remove the fixture.

Unscrew the wire nuts from the two wires connected to the fixture. Use a wire stripper to pull back about 1/2 inch of the insulation covering the wires.

Locate the stud. Screw a hickey into the stud. Keep in mind that the hickey must be flush with the bottom of the ceiling box.

Install a short nipple into the bottom of the hickey.

Disconnect the chandelier chain support from the chain on the fixture using pliers. Then, screw the chain support onto the short nipple, located at the bottom of the hickey. Take the locknut off the chain support.

Position the ceiling canopy over the ceiling box. Slide the locknut over the chain, followed by the canopy. Put the wires back through the fixture, chain and chain support.

Place the chain back on the chain support. Pull the wires through the hickey.

Cut off all the fixture wire except about 6 inches with a diagonal wire cutter, and pull back about 1/2 inch of insulation on the wires with a wire stripper. Twist the bare strands together in a clockwise direction, and solder them together using a soldering tool.

Reconnect the fixture wires to the ceiling wires by matching colored wires. Screw the nuts back onto the ends, and push the wires into the ceiling. Finally, position the canopy up over the chain support, slide the locknut over the chain and screw the locknut onto the chain support in a clockwise direction.

Turn the power back on.
