DIY Suitcase Vanity

If you like the vintage look, then make a vanity out of an old suitcase that you can pick up from a local flea market. A hard shell suitcase is recommended. A vanity is a workspace with storage and a mirror designed to help you put on makeup or to style your hair. By making a suitcase vanity, you will be able to transport your vanity as you travel. It also makes a charming piece while sitting on top of a table or tall, narrow chest of drawers.

Things You'll Need

  • Old suitcase (roughly 13-by-19 inches)
  • Hot glue sticks
  • Hot glue gun
  • Mirrored squares or handheld mirrors
  • Drawer compartments (about 12 inches long)
  • Vanity accessories

Instructions

    • 1

Insert a hot glue stick into the back of a hot glue gun. Plug the gun into a power outlet and allow the glue to warm up for several minutes.

    • 2

Open the suitcase so that the base of the suitcase is flush against your work space and the front lid of the suitcase is upright.

    • 3

Squeeze borders of glue on the back of a mirrored square or a large handheld mirror. Press the mirror into the middle inside lid of the suitcase. Hold the mirror in place until it dries, for about a minute.

Place the fabric-covered drawer compartment trays into the base of the suitcase. The drawer compartment trays should be about 12 inches long and 3 yo 5 inches wide. They look like trays, do not have lids and have compartments in which you can place different accessories. You have the option of gluing the compartments into the base of the suitcase or you can place them side-by-side in the bottom of the suitcase without glue in order to move the compartments around.

Fill the compartments with makeup, bobby pins, hair gel and hair brushes. Set the suitcase on a dresser or desk, making sure to keep it open so the mirror is facing you and upright while the accessory compartments are resting safely in the base.
