How to Hang a Decorative Object From the Ceiling

Hanging decorative objects from your ceiling requires that you choose a hook that is appropriate for the weight of the item. Some decorative objects, such as pendant lamps, are relatively heavy, while a hanging basket filled with a silk plant is typically lightweight. Knowing the correct location to hang the object and the tools to use is crucial to allow it to hang safely from the ceiling. Many decorative hooks list the weight they can tolerate on the packaging.

Instructions

    • 1

Hang the item from the best place on the ceiling. Many people hang decorative objects in a corner of the room, over a dining table or in front of a window.

    • 2

Depress the button on the stud finder and lay it on the ceiling area you chose.

    • 3

Slide it across the area until the light indicates the presence of a stud. Many indicate a stud with a beep or a flashing light.

    • 4

Draw a pencil mark on the area to indicate where you can attach the ceiling hook.

    • 5

Drill a tiny hole in the ceiling where you made the pencil mark. Use a drill bit that is slightly smaller than the threaded section of the decorative hook.

    • 6

Insert the end of the decorative hook with the threads into the hole.

    • 7

Twist the hook until it is tight against the ceiling. If this is difficult to accomplish, use a pair of needle-nose pliers to grip and turn the hook until it is secure.

    • 8

Hang the decorative object on the ceiling hook.
