Glass vs. Marble Backsplash

Minor kitchen remodels rank among the top five home improvement projects with the greatest return on investment, according to the National Association of Realtors’ 2010–11 Cost vs. Value Report. Adding a complementary backsplash is an inexpensive way to achieve a polished look in the kitchen; however, backsplashes are also utilized in bathrooms, laundry rooms, and other areas of the home. In addition to providing beauty and style, backsplashes are also an effective way to prevent water, grease and other liquids from splashing on the wall, and are available in an assortment of styles and materials, including glass and marble.
  1. Glass

    • The beauty of a glass backsplash is its versatility. In addition to purchasing prefabricated glass, you can also change the texture and shape of this material, create unique patterns, and even have stones and other decorative items inserted into the glass before it cools. Glass backsplashes can be painted or stained any color, which ensures a perfect match with any room’s decor. Due to the composition of glass backsplashes, they can also be used to reflect light and make small rooms appear larger than they really are. Recycled glass tiles are an option for environmentally-conscious consumers.

    Marble

    • Marble is a member of the stone backsplash family. Marble backsplashes are available in various colors, including grey, black and white, as well as blue and green. Because of the many veins and the color striations in marble, each cut has a uniqueness that cannot be duplicated. Marble can also be polished to produce a reflection that mimics a mirror. When selecting a color, lighter shades of marble reflect more light on certain surfaces like countertops and sinks than darker shades.

    Cost

    • Both glass and marble are considered premium backsplashes as reflected in their starting price of $50 per square foot, which does not include installation. Personalized designs for glass backsplashes will increase the base price. Other factors affecting the cost of both glass and marble include the size, pattern and thickness of these items. Both glass and marble tiles are less expensive, with a significantly lower price tag per square foot, but this option will not deliver the same impact.

    Maintenance

    • Glass backsplashes are virtually maintenance free. Resistant to stains and impervious to moisture and bacteria, they can be cleaned with water and glass cleaners. Marble backsplashes can be cleaned with soapy water. However, they will need to be routinely resealed to prevent liquid from seeping into the marble’s cracks, where it can cause staining and damage.
