How to Break Dishes With a Tile Nipper

Smashing unwanted dishes on the floor might work for stress relief, but if you want to make a mosaic out of the pieces, use a tile nipper. Tile nippers control the direction of the break in the dish making the piece fit into your mosaic or other crafts project. Use tile nippers cutting out unwanted logos or for saving specific designs on the dish you wish to use.

Instructions

    • 1

Wear gloves and safety goggles before breaking any dishes. Stoneware and chinaware plates can splinter when broken.

    • 2

Position the tile nippers so that the curve in the jaws faces you. The jaws flat end should face toward the point where you'd like the dish to break.

    • 3

Insert the plate into the tile nipper’s jaws until the jaws hold about one-quarter inch of the plate. Placing too much plate into the jaws at once may make breaking it difficult.

    • 4

Grasp the tile nippers toward the end of the handles away from the plate. This provides more leverage. Squeeze the handles together breaking the dish.
