How to Install Tile Sheets for a Kitchen Backsplash

Create a pattern for the tiles before touching the wall. Line them up according to your plan and make any necessary adjustments, determining if you require more tiles. Cut the tiles to fit with a tile saw.

Wash the walls with a soapy rag to remove any grease, dirt and dust. Wipe with a separate rag to remove excess moisture. Allow the wall to finish air drying before continuing.

Mix thinset mortar according to the package directions. Once the thinset is thoroughly mixed, spread it over the wall with the notched edge of the trowel. Examine the wall to ensure the thinset layer is even and make any necessary adjustments before continuing.

Place the first panel of mosaic tiles onto the wall. Press firmly to ensure they adherence to the thinset. Continue to apply the tiles to the wall, using equal pressure when setting them to ensure an even line is achieved.

Run your hand along the finished backsplash a last time to create an even line. Dampen a kitchen sponge with plain water and wipe down the tile’s protective paper. Allow the water to loosen the paper’s adhesive for at least 10 minutes before removing the paper from the tiles. Allow the mortar to set for at least 24 hours before continuing.

Stir epoxy grout according to the directions or until achieving a paste consistency. Slip on a pair of rubber gloves and begin to spread the epoxy grout evenly over the tiles. Allow the grout to set for 10 minutes before continuing.
