How to Install Stainless Steel Backing in a Kitchen

A backsplash protects your kitchen walls from splatters from cooking, but it can also be a decorative addition to the wall space between the countertop and cabinets. A stainless steel backsplash provides a clean, contemporary look to the kitchen while also brightening the space with reflected light and color. You can install the panels yourself, but ordering the panels pre-cut takes the guess work out of a perfect fit.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a template of the precise dimensions of the wall to be covered. Tape a piece of kraft paper to the wall. Mark the dimensions of the wall on the kraft paper. Mark exact locations of outlets and light switches.

    • 2

Remove the paper from the wall. Cut out a template using your markings. Place the template back on the wall to be sure openings for outlets and light switches are precise. Send or take your template to the manufacturer to pre-cut your backsplash.

    • 3

Turn off the power and remove outlet covers and switch plates when you are ready to install your backsplash. Cover your counter top with a protective drop cloth.

    • 4

Wash the wall surface with mild detergent to remove grease and cooking stains from the wall. Lightly sand the wall with 80-grit sandpaper for better adhesion. Wipe the wall with a tack cloth to remove dust from sanding.

    • 5

Lay the stainless steel panel on the floor. Apply construction adhesive to backside of the panel. Spread the adhesive out with a putty knife. Remove the paper covering from adhesive strips on the back of the panels, if there are any.

    • 6

Press the panel into place on the wall, making sure the openings for outlets and switches are accurately aligned. Smooth the panel tightly to the wall for a secure attachment.

    • 7

Anchor the panel to the wall with blue painter's tape for at least 24 hours until the adhesive is set.

    • 8

Remove the painter’s tape. Peel off the plastic protective coating from the panel. Replace the outlet covers and switch plates.
