What Is Dura Vinyl?

Numerous manufacturers, from housewares makers to automotive accessory companies, use the term “dura vinyl.” Although, as of 2011, outdoor building material manufacturer Outdoor Technologies, Inc. owns the trademark to the one-word term “Duravinyl,” other companies commonly use the term in reference to a thick, high-quality vinyl material. As there is no standard definition for the term, familiarize yourself with the product packaging or description to learn more about the vinyl content of each dura vinyl-labeled product.
  1. Properties

    • Although there is no one standard type of dura vinyl, the term generally implies multilayered vinyl products. At the high end, dura vinyl products use strong, six-gauge vinyl. Dura vinyl products tend to be durable, moisture resistant and washable with water. Depending on the thickness, dura vinyl can be stitched together with finished seams. Across numerous types of products, this material comes in a rainbow of colors, including red, black, brown, green and blue.

    Housewares and Flooring

    • Allergy Asthma Technology LLC, commonly known as Allertech, offers dura vinyl mattress covers for beds. These antimicrobal covers offer allergen and bed bug protection. Dura vinyl lends itself to interior flooring, including seamless floors for residential, industrial and commercial application. This type of flooring comes in solid colors, chipped textures and natural textures and may be installed over concrete, plywood and steel subfloors.

    Exteriors

    • Outside the house, certain brands of vinyl window shutters contain dura vinyl. These shutters mimic natural, 3-D wooden textures and come in shades ranging from basic earth tones to colorful hues. Outdoor Technologies uses its trademarked Duravinyl in vinyl fencing, railing and decking products.

    Other Uses

    • Some adhesive products -- including signs bearing labels as diverse as "No Smoking," "Children at Play" and "Caution" -- feature dura vinyl, which is in these cases a dual-layered material. These products are flexible, permanent adhesives that stick to smooth, curved and irregular surfaces and resist fading, humidity, solvents and abrasions. In the automotive sector, dura vinyl lends itself to car accessories such as seat covers, armrest covers, steering wheel covers, headrest covers, console covers and seat belt covers.
