How to Hang a Heavy Picture Between Two Wall Studs When the Picture Has Only One Hanging Point

Sometimes the perfect spot on the wall for a picture doesn’t coincide with the location of a wall stud. When you need to hang a heavy picture between two wall studs but the picture has only one hanging point, the hanging hardware you use will be the key to your success. Mount the hardware securely and your picture will stay right where you want it on the wall, even without a stud to anchor it.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the location where you want to hang the picture. For the most visually pleasing placement, place the center of the picture about 60 inches from the floor. Have an assistant hold the picture at this point, and place the level on top of the picture to ensure it is level. Make small pencil marks at the top-left and top-right corners to mark the corners on the wall. Remove the picture.

    • 2

Measure the width of the picture and divide it by two to find the center of the picture. Make a small pencil mark between the two corner marks to mark the center of the picture on the wall.

    • 3

Turn the picture over so the backside faces up. Measure the distance between the center hanging point to the top of the picture with the tape measure. Measure this same distance down from the center mark on the wall and make a pencil mark -- this is the location where you must install the drywall toggle.

    • 4

Drill a pilot hole at the hanging mark you placed on the wall.

    • 5

Position the picture hanging hook and the toggle screw at the pilot hole. As you drive the toggle into the drywall, the special bolt will expand its toggles on the backside of the drywall to anchor the bolt securely in the wall even without a stud. Continue screwing the screw into the wall until the hanging hook sits flush on the wall.

Erase the pencil marks from the wall carefully, but do not rub hard. Gentle erasing with the pencil eraser should remove the pencil marks successfully.

    • 7

Hang the picture on the hanging hook.
