Measure the circumference of the top of a round or oval ottoman, or the width and length of the top of a square or rectangular ottoman using a measuring tape.
Cut a shape out of a burlap sack using scissors to measure the dimensions of the ottoman plus 4 inches along each edge.
Cut six pieces of 3-inch-thick cotton batting to measure the exact measurement of the ottoman.
Layer the cotton batting into a stack on top of a the ottoman. Adjust the batting as needed to make the edges even on top of the ottoman.
Place the burlap on top of the batting stack, and adjust the burlap to lay evenly over the batting.
Fold the edges of the burlap circle under by 1 inch, then tack the edges onto the bottom edge of the ottoman using upholstery tacks and a hammer. Keep the burlap fabric taut as you hammer in the tacks. Space the tacks 1/2 an inch apart.
Trim off loose burlap strings before using the handmade burlap ottoman.
