Sand the surface of the wall using medium-grain sandpaper. Move the sandpaper in small, circular motions to remove any roughness or unevenness.
Wipe off the wall using a washcloth to remove any dust caused by the sanding.
Spread a 1-inch-thick layer of fine grout over the entire surface of the wall using a trowel.
Press 1-inch-thick flat stones halfway into the grout-covered wall. Space the stones 1/2 inch apart.
Spread a 1/2-inch-thick layer of grout over the top of the stone wall, then scrape off the excess grout using the trowel. This will push grout into areas without enough grout, and will remove excess grout from areas with too much grout.
Wipe off the surface of each stone using a washcloth, then allow the stone wall to air dry for 24 to 36 hours.
