How to Cover an Interior Wall With Stone

Interior walls painted in flat, uninteresting colors appear boring and can make the rest of the room look stark. Make your room more dynamic and appealing by covering the walls with stone. Professional painters or masons can apply stone to an interior wall, but hiring a professional craftsman is costly and may not fit into your decorating budget. Save money by creating a stone-faced interior wall yourself using a few inexpensive materials from a home improvement store.

Instructions

    • 1

Sand the surface of the wall using medium-grain sandpaper. Move the sandpaper in small, circular motions to remove any roughness or unevenness.

    • 2

Wipe off the wall using a washcloth to remove any dust caused by the sanding.

    • 3

Spread a 1-inch-thick layer of fine grout over the entire surface of the wall using a trowel.

    • 4

Press 1-inch-thick flat stones halfway into the grout-covered wall. Space the stones 1/2 inch apart.

    • 5

Spread a 1/2-inch-thick layer of grout over the top of the stone wall, then scrape off the excess grout using the trowel. This will push grout into areas without enough grout, and will remove excess grout from areas with too much grout.

Wipe off the surface of each stone using a washcloth, then allow the stone wall to air dry for 24 to 36 hours.
