How to Make Shiny Stone Countertops

Kitchen countertops do not have to be constructed out of standard slab materials. Instead, create countertops that are constructed out of natural materials, such as shiny stones. Professional cabinet craftsmen or masons can install shiny stone countertops in your kitchen but may charge dearly for the work. Save money by putting in the shiny stone countertops yourself using a few materials and tools found at hardware shop or home improvement store.

Instructions

    • 1

Sand the surface of the existing wooden countertop base using an electric sander with a medium-grit sanding belt. This makes the surface smooth and even, removing an splintering and roughness.

    • 2

Vacuum the countertop base and surrounding area using a shop vacuum with brush attachment. This removes and sawdust and debris from the area.

    • 3

Spread a 1-inch layer of fine grout over the entire surface of the countertop base using a trowel. Apply the grout in an even layer.

    • 4

Press flat 1/2-inch thick stones halfway into the grout, covering the entire surface of the counter with stones. Space each stone 1/4-inch apart. This will squeeze the grout up between the stones.

    • 5

Scrape a trowel across the countertop. This will press grout into areas with too little grout and remove excess grout from areas with too much grout.

    • 6

Wipe the top of each stone clean using a wet washcloth. Allow the stone-covered counter to air dry for 18 to 24 hours.

    • 7

Apply a thick layer of glossy, waterproof stone and masonry sealant over the entire surface of the countertop. This will both seal the stones and grout and will make the countertop shiny. Allow the sealant to dry for 12 to 18 hours before using the shiny stone countertop.
