How to Make Headboards From Homemade Materials

Making your own headboard can be a thrifty way to personalize a bedroom. Use standard plywood and recycled blue jeans from your own out-grown collection or from a thrift store to create a shabby-chic, country-blue focal point in the room. Mix jean colors and styles for a truly one-of-a-kind headboard.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the jeans and measure the length of each pair. Jeans should be between 36 and 40 inches long.

    • 2

Measure and cut the plywood to the same width of the bed. Cut the plywood to a height of five feet.

    • 3

Measure and cut the upholstery foam to match the dimensions of the cut plywood.

    • 4

Cover the surface of the wood with spray adhesive and press the foam to the plywood.

    • 5

Flip the padded board over and line up pairs of blue jeans along the back edge of the board. Jeans should be laid out so that the back sides are facing you. Place the jeans tightly up against each other to cover the entire length of the board.

    • 6

Staple the uppermost part of the waistband of each pair of jeans to the board using a staple gun and heavy-duty ½-inch staples. Place staples close together along the fabric to secure it.

    • 7

Flip the jeans over the top of the board and turn the board over so the padded side is now facing upward. Pull each pair of jeans tightly down toward the bottom of the headboard.

    • 8

Staple the cuffs of the jeans to the very bottom or back of the headboard. There may be some upholstery foam showing between the legs of the jeans.

    • 9

Fill in any visible foam spaces by stapling additional pairs of jeans from the bottom of the headboard upward. Space the jeans so that the legs of the upward-facing jeans fill in the gaps of the downward-facing jeans. Pull tight and staple to the top of the board.

    • 10

Cover any visible staples with a neatly placed row of silver upholstery tacks. Line the entire perimeter of the headboard with tacks to create a finished look.
