How to Build a Child's Nook

Building a nook for your child will give her a unique space of her own to keep her toys or for homework and other activities. If the nook is a covered closet or underneath a staircase, the space has the added benefit of feeling like a secret room. Decorating a child's nook doesn't have to be arduous. Using your imagination, you can create a space for a child that she will enjoy.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a space to convert into a nook. A closet, an empty wall, or the open space underneath the stairs are all appropriate. If you're using a closet, remove the closet rod and any unnecessary shelves and doors.

    • 2

Paint the walls of the nook a different color. A new paint color will designate this area of the room as a new space. Use youthful paint colors such as pink, bright green or blue to appeal to the child.

    • 3

Hang wall art that is of interest to the child. Children who enjoy ocean life might get a kick out of pictures of dolphins, whales and sharks. Those who enjoy fantasy may like pictures of wizards, mermaids or the universe.

    • 4

Place furniture in the nook to keep the area organized. If the nook is for play, use a toy chest, a shelf with plastic baskets, and a small table and chairs. For a homework nook, place a desk, chair and bookshelf there.

Select appropriate lighting. This is especially important for a homework nook or a nook without any natural light. Place a standing lamp in a play nook or a desk lamp in a study nook.

Gather all necessary supplies and toys, and place them in the nook. For kids to stay in the nook, they must have everything they need. Make sure there are appropriate amounts of pencils, paper and crayons. Stack books and reference materials on the bookshelf. Keep all toys organized in baskets, on the shelf or in the toy chest.
