How to Tile a Wall Hinged Table

A wall-hinged table creates a versatile work surface that can be folded up against the wall when not in use. These tables are ideal for adding extra counter space in small kitchens, laundry or craft rooms. You can add a little extra style to the table by tiling the top of it. Use small mosaic style tiles so that the table remains lightweight but still features the elegance of a tiled surface. The possibilities for the style of the tile are limited only to your imagination.

Instructions

    • 1

Lower the table to the open position so that the surface is flat. Spread an even layer of tile mastic with a notched trowel.

    • 2

Lay the tiles into the mastic in rows, starting at one end of the table and working your way across to the opposite end. Cut any tiles that don’t fit to size by using tile nippers.

    • 3

Insert tile spacers between the tile joints as you lay the tiles to ensure even spacing. Allow the mastic to dry for 24 hours. Pull out the tile spacers from between the tile joints with your fingers.

    • 4

Spread grout between the tile joints by dragging a grout float across the tiled table surface at a slight downward angle. Allow the grout to dry for about 15 minutes until a haze covers over the surface.

    • 5

Dampen a sponge in a bucket of water. Wash off the tiled surface, wringing it out as you wash it. Continue to wash the surface until the sponge wrings out clean water.

Allow the grout to cure for about two weeks. Apply grout sealant to the grout lines by using the applicator that was included in the sealant package. Allow the sealant to dry for 24 hours before using the table.
