Set a 1-inch by 6-inch by 36-inch board on the working surface with its largest surface facing upward. Draw the outline of the equipment rack you would like to build on the side of this board in a repeating, sharply curved manner; thus, once cut, the board will have one straight side and one side with a series of hooks.
Use a reciprocating saw or jigsaw with a wood blade to cut out the outline of the rack. Sand the cut edges of the board with medium-grit sandpaper. To cut out an identical copy of this rack board, set the rack board on top of another 1-inch by 6-inch by 36-inch board, trace its outline and repeat.
Cover each rack board with carpet, cutting out appropriate-sized pieces with a utility knife. Stretch the carpet over the curved surfaces and staple it in place against the large, flat surfaces of the boards. Stretch the carpet over the straight edge of the rack boards and staple it in place on the straightedge. Cut off any excess carpet with the utility knife.
Set two 1-inch by 4-inch by 24-inch boards with their largest faces on the working surface. Make these boards, which are the support boards, parallel to each other about 3 feet apart. Set the cut out rack boards on top of them, perpendicular to these boards with their thin, long edge touching them. Arrange the four boards to form a rectangular frame.
Flip the frame over with the help of an assistant and drill through the back of the support boards, through the carpet and into the rack boards, making holes every 12 inches and using a drill bit slightly smaller in diameter than that of the wood screws you will use. Set 3-inch wood screws in each hole and tighten completely to attach the boards.
