How to Make Stapled Cushion Corners

Recovering a chair cushion can be an affordable way to freshen furniture and give it a new look. The fabric on furniture often wears faster than the structural parts, which means a few yards of fabric may be all you need to extend the life of your furniture. One of the final reupholstering steps is to make stapled cushion corners as you attach new fabric to a chair cushion.

Things You'll Need

  • Wood-framed cushion (with padding)
  • Upholstery fabric
  • Tape measure
  • Scissors
  • Staple gun

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the wood-framed cushion from the furniture.

    • 2

Place the piece of upholstery fabric on a flat work surface with the wrong side facing up. Place the wood-framed cushion on the fabric, centering the cushion on the fabric.

    • 3

Measure approximately 5 inches of extra fabric on all sides of the cushion, cutting the excess fabric away with the scissors, if necessary.

    • 4

Fold the fabric along one edge of the cushion starting at the center. Place staples 1 inch apart working toward each corner. Stop stapling about 4 inches away from both corners.

    • 5

Pull the fabric taut toward the opposite side of the cushion and staple this side using the same process.

    • 6

Repeat the same technique to staple the remaining two sides of the cushion. This leaves the corners to staple last.

    • 7

Fold the corner of the fabric straight over the corner of the cushion and place a staple in the fabric to hold it. Make small pleats in the fabric on both sides of the center staple to fold the fabric neatly on both sides of the corner. Staple the pleats as you make them to hold them tightly. Use as many staples as necessary to hold the fabric securely. Repeat the same process on each corner of the cushion.

Replace the cushion in the furniture.
