How to Bind a Comforter

The outer edge of a comforter has a matching or contrasting strip of fabric that binds the edges of the comforter tightly. Although the construction of a comforter is not as complicated as sewing a quilt, the two bed coverings require a similar process to finish. Bind a comforter by sewing the binding fabric neatly and carefully around the outer edge. When you finish, you will be ready to add the comforter to your bed.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Blanket binding, 2 inches wide
  • Iron

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the perimeter of the comforter with the tape measure and add 1 1/2 inches to the measurement. Cut a length of blanket binding that matches this adjusted measurement.

    • 2

Lay the comforter out neatly on a flat surface with the top side facing up. Fold the blanket binding in half and press the fold along the entire length of the binding to keep it folded.

    • 3

Align the raw edges of the blanket binding with the raw edge of the comforter. Fold over the end of the binding 1/2 inch and begin pinning the binding to the comforter. When you reach the first corner, fold the binding diagonally at the corner to wrap it around neatly. Pin the folds in place and continue pinning along every side and around every corner until you reach the starting spot. Overlap the binding 1/2 inch, fold over the end 1/2 inch and pin the fold in place.

    • 4

Stitch the binding to the comforter using a 1/2-inch seam allowance. When you reach each corner, stop stitching 1/2 inch from the edge, insert the needle down into the comforter, raise the presser foot and rotate the comforter 90 degrees to turn the corner. Lower the presser foot and continue stitching along each edge and around each corner. When you reach the starting point, stitch 1 inch beyond the point where the binding ends and backstitch three stitches before you finish sewing. Cut the excess threads off and remove the pins.

    • 5

Lay out the comforter again, this time with the back side facing up. Fold the binding to the backside of the comforter and pin it in place around the entire perimeter. Fold the corners neatly with a diagonal fold that creates a mitered corner. Pin the binding in place.

    • 6

Stitch around the comforter again to sew the edge of the binding in place. Use the same process of stitching around the edges and corners as you used on the front side. Backstitch to finish, clip excess threads and remove the pins.
