Measure the area reserved for the room divider to determine how many place mats will be required for the project. For instance, measure along the floor as the wood dowels will hang horizontal and parallel to the floor at the top and the bottom of the divider. Cut the wood dowels to the determined size.
Paint the dowels and let dry. In the meantime, screw the ceiling hooks in place where the room divider will hang.
Lay out the mats beneath the dowel on the ground. Actual numbers will vary depending on the area reserved as well as the type of place mats chosen and their placement within the room divider. For instance, fewer place mats will be required for a rectangular style, which can be placed into a neat grid, while more will be required if the place mats are circular.
Punch holes into the place mats and feed the ribbon, wool, raffia or fishing line through the holes and knot them to string the mats together. For rectangular mats, the corners are the best spot for hole alignment. For circular or oval mats, line up the holes at the top and bottom of each mat. If the place mats are fabric, skip the hole punch and sew the ribbon to the backside to attach the mats.
Form another line of place mats the same way and attach the two lines to form a grid. Repeat the process until you have reached your target size.
Tie the place mat grid to the wood dowels at top and bottom. Use remaining lengths of ribbon, wool, raffia or fishing line to make a loop for hanging the place mat room divider with the ceiling hooks. If the divider is too heavy for raffia or fishing line, use picture framing wire.
