How to Make a Desk Top With a Rock Inlay

Plain, flat-looking desk tops can appear bare and can make your room look uninteresting. One solution is to cover the top of the desk with a beautiful and decorative rock inlay. Professional craftsmen can install a rock inlay onto a desk top, but hiring a professional may not be in your decorating budget. You can save money by installing the rock inlay yourself using a few inexpensive materials and tools found at any hardware store.

  • Vacuum
  • Fine grout
  • Trowel
  • Rock tiles, 1/2 inch thick

Instructions

    • 1

Sand the top of the desk using medium-grit sandpaper to remove roughness, create an even surface and to eliminate splintering.

    • 2

Vacuum the desk top to eliminate sawdust and debris.

    • 3

Spread a 1-inch-thick layer of fine grout over the entire desk top using a trowel, then press rock tiles halfway into the grout. Space each of the rock tiles out by 1/4 inch.

    • 4

Scrape the trowel over the surface of the rock inlay, which will spread the excess grout into areas with too little grout.

    • 5

Wipe off the surface of each rock tile using a damp washcloth. Allow the rock inlay top of the desk to dry for 24 hours.

    • 6

Paint a layer of stone sealant over the desk top using a 2-inch flat paintbrush. Allow the sealant to dry for eight hours.
