Draw the exact size and shape that you wish for the cushion insert to be on a piece of newspaper with a marker. If you need to, trace the cushion that you plan on using the insert with.
Cut the pattern from the newspaper using a pair of scissors.
Double over some thin fabric in the color of your choice and secure the paper pattern to the fabric using sewing pins. Keep in mind that the color of the insert will not be visible after it is inside your chosen cushion.
Cut the doubled over fabric to match the paper pattern. Remove the sewing pins and paper pattern.
Bind the outside perimeter of the two pieces of fabric together with more sewing pins.
Use a needle and thread or loaded sewing machine to stitch the perimeter of the fabric. Stop sewing when you have 2 inches of open space left. Knot the thread and cut away the needle with scissors.
Turn the insert case right-side out through the hole you left in the fabric.
Stuff the insert case with kapok fiber filling, which is a very soft but durable cushion insert material that is mildew and mold resistant. Shove the filling into the corners of the insert with a wooden dowel.
Sew shut the remaining 2 inches of fabric to complete the cushion insert.
Insert the mildew resistant pad into your chosen cushion.
