What Are Polished Surface Tiles?

If you are looking for a way to add a little sparkle to your kitchen or bathroom design, opt for polished surface tiles for your floors, bathroom walls or backsplash. Most decorative tiles have protective overlays that protect them from scratching, chipping and cracking over time. Polished surface tiles are buffed to a smooth finish and generally have a high-gloss protective coating that creates a lustrous appeal.
  1. Factory Polished Tiles

    • Polished surface tiles are honed and buffed, using special equipment, at factories where they are manufactured. According to North American Tile Cleaning Organization, factories polish porcelain tiles using silicone carbide polishing machines. Due to porcelain's hard dense composition, it is too difficult to polish porcelain tiles with normal diamond polishing machines. Diamond polishing machines work best on other manmade tiles and natural stone tiles, like marble and granite. One drawback with some polished tiles is that the polishing process creates a hazy film on the surface of the tile that is not removable with soapy water or chemical cleaners. Inspect your tiles carefully before installation to ensure there is no visible haziness.

    Polishing After Installation Not Recommended

    • Buffing and polishing tiles after installation is not recommended unless you hire a certified professional for the task. Household waxes and surface cleaners will not effectively polish factory-sealed tiles. North American Tile Cleaning Organization states that restoration professionals do not recommend applying topical glossy sealers to tiles to make them appear shiny. These topical glossy sealers do not adhere properly and often chip, crack and peel away from surface tiles. Removing topical sealers requires floor stripping chemicals that can damage your tile and make them appear dull and lifeless. Avoid polishing tiles with chemicals, waxes and commercial equipment unless you have professional skills to do so.

    Types of Polished Surface Tiles

    • Polished surface tiles are available in a variety of materials. Porcelain and ceramic tiles are constructed from clay and have synthetic protective overlays that come in both flat and polished varieties. Marble is a decorative surface tile that is most readily available in its polished form. Some marble varieties have a high-gloss polished finish, and others have a more subtle satin polished finish. Granite is available in both polished and unpolished tile designs. Opt for polished tile if you want a shiny surface that reflects light and adds luster to your living space.

    Maintenance and Cleaning

    • Even though polished surface tiles are honed and polished by a manufacturer before installation, it is important to clean and maintain your tiles once they are installed in your home. According to the World Floor Covering Association, tile should be cleaned regularly with mild detergents and warm water. Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive cleansers and steel wool products that could scuff and damage polished tile. Some polished tiles have a porous surface that requires frequent mild cleaning to keep dirt, dust and grime from collecting in the small grooves.
