What Do I Need to Hang My Waterfall Valances With My Panels and Inner Liners?

The right window treatment can set the tone for a whole room. Incorporating valances, drapes and liner curtains gives an elegance to living space that it hard to achieve in other ways. Producing this layered effect requires more complex curtain hardware than you would use for simple curtains. Learn about the varieties of hardware available to hang a three-layered window treatment.
  1. Triple Curtain Rods

    • Manufactures have created double-rod and triple-rod assemblies that take guesswork out of hanging more than one layer of curtains. A single set of brackets holds all three rods, one for the valance, one for drapes and one for liner curtains, keeping just the right amount of space between each pair of rods. Before installing fixed triple rods, you need to know whether the bracket plate will go on, above or beside the window frame, to assure you have the correct installation hardware. As with any hanger or other hardware installed into drywall or sheetrock, resist moving the curtains too often. This will lessen the chances that hangers will pull out of unsupported wall.

    Triple Traverse Rods

    • Traverse rods are ideal when curtains are frequently opened and closed, to capture the sunset or keep out early morning glare. Opening and tying back drapes can also give you a summer look without taking drapes down. Traverse triples offer the same advantages as fixed triple rods, with the additional benefit of movement. Most often, rods for liner panels and drapes move, while the outermost rod, the valance holder, is fixed, but you may be able to locate custom-made sets with three moving rods.

    Other Curtain Rod Configurations

    • Elaborate valances may well be best set off by a distinctive decorative rod of their own. Fancy brackets, made of wood or wrought iron, can hold straight rods of similar materials. Unlike fixed or traverse triple rods, brackets extend straight out from the window frame, preventing curtains from turning the end corners to completely seal light and drafts from windows.

    Motorized Traverse Rods

    • For the height in light and temperature control, motorized traverse rods can carry up to three depths of coverage and address some particular window problems. Consider motorized traverse rods for window-walls. They can also make adjusting curtains in bay and bow windows easier and can be customized to handle architectural corners. While a substantial commitment to the look of your decor, they free you from dodging furniture to open or close curtains.
