Hanging Rugs With Fringes

Rugs aren’t just for covering your hardwoods or keeping muddy shoe prints off carpets anymore. This is especially true if you’re the proud owner of a family heirloom you wouldn’t dream of sullying by laying the piece on your floor. Another option is to display the rug as a piece of art on the wall. Even if your rug features fringe, it’s possible to mount the piece on the wall without causing severe damage to it or the wall.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the rug face down on a flat, clean surface. Cut two pieces of canvas facing to fit the length of the rug and approximately 4 to 5 inches in width.

    • 2

Push and hold the fringe against the back of the rug. Lay the canvas facing over the fringe and secure it to the rug with straight pins. Repeat this on the opposite side of the rug, ensuring that you secure the fringe between the canvas facing and the rug’s backing.

    • 3

Sew the canvas facing to the rug’s backing with a straight stitch. Using a needle and thread, sew a row of stitching over the vertical edges of both canvas backing pieces.

    • 4

Measure the four sides of the rug and cut four pieces of hook-and-loop fasteners to fit. Set either piece of the hook-and-loop fastener on the backing approximately 1/4 to 1/2 inch away from the rug’s edge. Secure the fastener to the rug with straight pins.

    • 5

Examine the hook-and-loop fastener strip to ensure its straight before sewing. Use a ruler or level to check the straightness of the fastener strip, not the rug’s edge. Sew the hook-and-loop fastener to the rug using a straight stitch with a needle and thread.

    • 6

Attach the alternate strip of the hook-and-loop fastener to the wall with 1 to 2 inch nails. Center the hook-and-loop fasteners on the rug over the wall-mounted strips and press down along the length of the rug to secure it to the wall.
