How to Calculate the Fabric Yardage for a Queen-Size Bed

As you plan a project to make bedding for a bed, purchase enough materials to complete the entire project. Calculate the fabric yardage for a queen-size bed to make each bedding piece you need. From a comforter or coverlet to the pillow shams and dust ruffle, each piece will require a specific amount of fabric to sew. The finished result promises to be an attractively coordinated ensemble for the bedroom.

Figure 8 yards of 54-inch-wide fabric to make a queen comforter or coverlet. A coverlet lies flat on the top of the bed with pillow shams sitting on top and a dust ruffle underneath around the bottom edges. To make a bedspread instead, figure 11 yards of 54-inch-wide fabric. A bedspread hangs to the floor and covers the pillows.

    • 2

Add 2.5 yards of fabric for each flanged pillow sham or 2.75 yards of fabric for each ruffled pillow sham.

    • 3

Calculate 9 yards of fabric to make a queen-size dust ruffle.

    • 4

Add the yardage amounts together to arrive at the total amount of fabric required to make the bedding. For example, to make a queen coverlet, four flanged pillow shams and a dust ruffle, add 8 and 10 and 9 to equal 27 yards.
