How to Build a Rock Stage in a Basement Room

Basements and garages are often the rehearsal havens for rock bands across the country. Basements often have the space needed for a musical performance while also providing some sound buffering to prevent the noise from spreading throughout the rest of the house. A basement doesn't have to be a drab, dull location. Building a rock stage in the basement gives you a visually impressive place to work on your music and you can also hold your own small shows before an audience.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up your musical instruments and amplifiers on the basement floor so you know how much space you need to accommodate everything. Measure the space around the perimeter of the performance space with a tape measure. This reveals the minimum size of your stage.

    • 2

Assemble laminate flooring pieces so the laminate covers the space you just measured. The laminate pieces typically slide into each other like a key and then one side slides slightly to lock the pieces in place. Laminate is an attractive and durable flooring option that works well for staging.

    • 3

Plug in halogen lights at the front and back of the stage and change the colors by taping lighting gels over the front grate of each one. This gives your stage more production value. The lights can be found at hardware stores. Because the lights are bright, avoid looking into them when setting them up and aim them carefully so they don't interfere with the band members as they play.

    • 4

Place bike racks around the laminate and the lights so people who watch the rehearsal or performance are kept away from the stage itself and any electrical wires that could cause injury. Tape down the wires and cables to the floor with duct tape to prevent tripping accidents.

Add a fog machine to a power outlet if you have access to one and have adequate ventilation in the basement. This adds another effect to make your stage more impressive to a live audience.

Set up a video camera on a tripod across from the stage so you can film performances and rehearsals. Place more bike racks around the camera if you bring in a live audience to prevent the tripod from getting knocked over.
