How to Drape Sheer Scarves for a Canopy

A fabric canopy can provide texture and color to a room’s decor. The fabric you use depends on the finished effect you desire. Sheer fabric helps create an informal canopy, while heavy fabric offers a more formal canopy. When you drape sheer scarves for a canopy, the ready-made scarves make it easy to decorate a room artfully and tastefully.

Instructions

    • 1

Make pencil marks to mark points on the ceiling where you wish to install the canopy. For example, if you are making a canopy over a bed, mark immediately above each of the four corners of the bed.

    • 2

Drill pilot holes at each mark with a drill.

    • 3

Install a cup hook at each pilot hole by screwing the cup hook into the ceiling completely.

    • 4

Arrange a string from the floor to a cup hook. Stretch the string from the first cup hook to another cup hook to create the canopy, swagging the string between the hooks attractively.

Pull the string back down to the floor. Add 20 inches to the string length to create a puddle of fabric on the floor beneath each cup hook (10 inches for each fabric puddle) and cut the string at this length.

    • 5

Measure the string with the tape measure marking the scarf length you need to drape between two cup hooks. Purchase one scarf this length to drape between two cup hooks. If you have four cup hooks, purchase two scarves.

    • 6

Place two plastic rings onto a scarf. Slide the rings along the scarf to position them at roughly the spots where you wish to hang them from the cup hooks. Slip a ring over each cup hook to hang the scarf from the hooks.

    • 7

Stand back and assess the drape of the scarf to see if it looks neat and even. Adjust the position of the rings along the scarf to make smaller or larger swags between the cup hooks. Arrange the puddles of fabric on the floor.

    • 8

Repeat the same process with additional scarves, if applicable.
