What Color Furniture Goes With Maroon Chairs?

Steeply discounted or free furniture is a great help when you're decorating on a budget, but it's sometimes in a color palette you wouldn't ordinarily choose. This is where furniture color combinations can make or break a room. If you've received maroon chairs and have no idea how to fit them into your current color scheme, look to artists' color wheels to find new ways to decorate your home and accommodate your frugal find.
  1. Red Family

    • Maroon is a combination of dark red and rose, so it can fit well in a romantic room concentrating on the red and pink family. This relies on a classic design method of using multiple shades of the same basic color. Combine your maroon chairs with a light pink or rose couch and add touches of gray with pink undertones for light accents.

    Complementary Colors

    • Color theory says that complementary colors, or those colors that sit across from each other on the color wheel, make for a striking yet harmonious palette. Look across a basic color wheel from maroon and you'll find a bright lime green. While not very restful, this look can be bright and exciting in the right setting, such as a casual den or children's room.

    Basic Black

    • Don't try to match your maroon chairs to any other furniture; use the maroon as the focal color and add stark black and white pieces to the rest of the room. Pick up other maroon pieces, such as pillows and a rug, to pull the room together and use painted wood pieces as well as upholstered couches and footstools.

    Patriotic Twist

    • Maroon can be seen as a darkened red, and red is one-third of one of the most classic color combinations. Add darkened blue in the form of navy and darken the white by choosing cream-colored pillows and accents. The basic patriotic mix of red, white and blue will look richer and more vibrant by adding some shading to the hues.

    Look to Nature

    • Think of the colors of a poinsettia plant to find another color combination to go with maroon chairs. Choose a couch in a deep forest green and paint shelves a grayish white. Keep the colors on the darker side to avoid a Christmas feel and consider tapestry prints in pillows and rugs to combine the hues.
