How to Decorate the Sloped Walls and Roof of an Attic Bedroom

A bedroom situated atop a home can be romantic or simply private. Transforming an attic into a useful room, such as a bedroom, adds space and often value to the house. The decorating challenges, however, are unique for sloping ceilings going up to the point of a roof.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint the slope of the walls in white, light or bright colors. Lighter colors make a room seem larger, making them ideal for sloping walls. The expansive look helps hide the shrinking walls. If you want bright colors, consider painting a darker shade at the bottom and a lighter shade higher up. This helps mitigate the shrinking appearance.

    • 2

Add molding to the peak of the ceiling. If the ceiling comes to one defined point, cover it with a piece of wood molding intended for a wall corner. This flattens the area and lessens the disappearing look of the ceiling.

    • 3

Aim lights at the ceiling to brighten the area. Hang wall lighting or place lamps so the light shines upward onto the sloping walls and ceiling. The brightening effect lessens the appearance of the slope.

    • 4

Use mirrors or mirrored tile on the slope. Large mirrors placed directly across from one another or a wall of mirrored tile makes the room seem bigger and minimizes sloping effects.

    • 5

Hang art, posters or other pictures on the wall below the beginning of the inward slope. This draws attention to the broadest part of the room and away from the narrowing walls.
