I Need Help Decorating With a Red & Black Sofa

A red and black sofa may appear to be a bossy piece of furniture when you place it in front of bare white walls, but with some consideration you can pair it with a color scheme that will tie the look together effortlessly. Options are available to suit any home, whether you choose a bold or muted design scheme. Look to the existing decor of your home to help you unify the space as a whole.
  1. Turquoise

    • Paint the walls a bright shade of turquoise and use accents of red, black, turquoise and white all over the room. Choose a graphic print such as damask, arabesque, stripes, geometrics, herringbone or honeycomb for the textiles in the room. Mix and match patterns with different fabrics to create layers or texture for a dynamic look that will tie the whole space together. For another look altogether, wallpaper the room with an oversized floral print with turquoise, white and red in the pattern.

    Yellow

    • For a bright color palette look to yellow to balance the sofa. Lemon is a popular choice, but you can experiment with color swatches to find a shade to work for your home. Look to shades of bright yellow, pale yellow, ochre, mustard and gold. It might help to paint sections of color around the sofa to see how it will look at different times of day. Wooden furniture accents in a mid-range tone, such as walnut, will round out the color scheme. Add yellow and red accessories side-by-side on a wooden shelf to repeat the scheme elsewhere in the room.

    Charcoal

    • Shades of red and gray mix well with red and black. One idea is to wallpaper with a tone-on-tone damask pattern in shades of charcoal and gray. For a pop of color, add a red acrylic or glass chandelier and reupholster a vintage chair or two with soft gray velvet and red painted wood. Or, paint the walls a light shade of gray and paint the trim in a darker shade of charcoal or black.

    Kelly Green

    • For an eclectic look, paint the walls kelly green, but create a horizontal glaze treatment on the walls in a stripe pattern. Create a quirky gallery wall above the sofa with decorative frames of different shapes and sizes all painted the same shade of red. Introduce pops of bright blue into the mix, and balance everything with metallic accents in silver or gold. Another thing you can do is create shadow boxes on the walls using trim painted in black or white. Hang red and black art and choose textiles in a variety of colors and patterns to tie the whole look together.
