Instructions

    • 1

Measure your windows. Decide on the proper dimensions for a good heart shape to see how it will fit your window. Add extra height to the valance by going above the window frame. Make sure the heart shape extends past the sides of the window frame at least 2 inches.

    • 2

Draw the pattern on a piece of paper, then fold it in half so both sides are symmetrical. Line up the sides of the heart so they are even on both sides. Cut out the shape with scissors and transfer it to the plywood by drawing an outline of the shape with the marking pen. Cut out the shape with a jigsaw.

    • 3

Cut a mounting board that will attach along the top of the window frame and will be secured to the back of the heart shape. Measure the width of the heart shape at the widest point across and subtract 2 inches on each side. Make sure the heart shape will extend out in front of the window at least 1 inch, or far enough to clear curtains or blinds hanging in the window. For instance, if the heart shape is 24-by-24 inches, the mounting board should measure about 20-by-6 inches.

    • 4

Cut the batting and fabric so they measure 3 inches larger than the plywood heart shape. Spray the plywood shape with the spray adhesive and attach batting.

    • 5

Lay the fabric right-side down and situate the heart-shaped plywood over the fabric with the batting-side down. Pull the fabric and batting around the edge and staple it to the backside of the plywood. Secure the first two staples at the top and bottom, with the next two on each side of the heart shape. Stabilize the fabric by filling it in with staples about 2 inches apart along the back edge. Trim excess batting and fabric with scissors.

    • 6

Draw a pattern on the lining using the heart-shaped plywood as a template. Cut it one-half-inch wider around the edges. Fold the edges just under one-half inch and staple to the back of the plywood, covering the staples used for securing the batting and fabric.

    • 7

Cut a piece of lining to cover the mounting board. Make it 3 inches larger around all edges so that enough is available to turn under the raw edges. Staple the lining on the board by starting in the middle and working toward the corners. Tuck and fold the corners neatly, trimming away excess lining.

    • 8

Use 2-inch "L" brackets to screw the mounting board onto the heart-shaped plywood. Space the brackets every 2 feet across the back of the valance and make sure they are level. Poke a small hole in the lining with scissors if the lining twists when screwing on the brackets.

    • 9

Attach the 3-inch "L" brackets onto the bottom side of the mounting board using 3/4-inch screws. Mount the valance onto the window frame or wall using 1.25-inch screws.
