Can the Wall and the Carpet Be Close in Color?

Choosing the right colors for your walls and carpeting sets the mood of the room while giving it a harmonious feel. When picking out paint and carpeting you should look to blend different shades rather than match the colors exactly, which can cause you to lose the dimensions of the room as your eyes have trouble finding where the carpet ends and the wall begins. However, a carpet of the same color but several shades lighter than the walls can capture more light and brighten your room while one that is several shades darker can bring a cozy elegance.

Think of a basic color and tone you would consider for your walls and carpet. Warm tones may have flecks of gold or earthy tints, cool tones may have flecks of silver or ashy tints and neutral tones are neither warm nor cool. For example, if you have decided to go with a warm green you would be interested in green colors with gold or earth undertones.

Visit a home supply store and take home several sheets of paint and carpet swatches which go along with your color and tone of choice. The color swatches will vary in dark and light shades. Also pick up some swatches of your color of choice in a neutral tone. Neutral can work with both warm and cool colors.

Compare your swatches in the room you would like to remodel first in the morning, then in the afternoon and then in the evening to pick your favorite shades. Tones will look different at different times of day in natural sunlight and with artificial lighting. Some shades you may have considered before may appear too dark or too light in the room.

Choose the shade of paint you would like for the room based on how your paint swatches looked in each type of lighting.

Look at the room to determine what kind of effect you want to create. For smaller rooms, neutral carpet colors blend into the wall more easily, making the room look bigger. A dark, contrasting carpet can make the walls appear taller. Lighter carpets can brighten the room and capture more light.

Compare carpet swatches to the paint color you chose. Remember not to match the exact shade of the walls with the carpet because too little contrast can throw off the dimensions of the room. If you want the walls and carpet to be close in color, choose a carpet swatch that is the same color but at least two shades lighter or darker than the paint you picked.
