Can You Re-laminate a Countertop With a Bullnose Front?

When it comes to repairing a bullnose front countertop, re-laminating the surface is a task that cannot be completed. Instead of trying to tackle the impossible task of bending a sheet of laminate over a curved edge, apply a fresh coat of paint to the surface to accomplish the same goal. By refinishing the bullnose front countertop, you are restoring the life of the surface at a fraction of the cost when compared to replacing the entire countertop. Refinish the surface to prolong the life of the countertop in less than a days work.

Instructions

    • 1

Clear items off the countertop surface and clean the countertop thoroughly with degreaser. Remove any buildup, grease or dirt on the surface to create a smooth finish.

    • 2

Rough up the surface with 150-grit sandpaper. Sand in a circular motion to create a rough texture, which will enable the primer to adhere properly to the surface.

    • 3

Fill in any cracks on the surface with putty. Use a 2-inch putty knife to spread any putty over pitted areas or areas on the surface that are missing laminate. Scrape away excess putty and allow it to dry completely.

    • 4

Re-sand the surface with 150-grit sandpaper and clean the surface one additional time with degreaser. Apply painters tape around all edges and joining wall surfaces. Paint over the edges of sinks, ovens, cook-tops and any other surface that you cannot easily remove.

    • 5

Prime the countertop surface. Apply a thin, even layer of laminate primer over the entire countertop surface using a paintbrush. Apply primer in a consistent direction with the paintbrush. Allow primer to dry for two hours before continuing.

    • 6

Apply a thin layer of laminate paint over the countertop surface using a paintbrush. Cover the surface completely, and sand over with wet and dry abrasive paper. Use the wet and dry abrasive paper to create a texture to the surface. Wipe the surface down with a line-free cloth.

    • 7

Apply one additional thin layer of laminate paint over the countertop surface using a paintbrush. Cover the surface completely with laminate paint. Allow the surface to dry for 72 hours before placing any items on the surface. Remove painters tape after 12 hours.
