How to Paint a Living Room Using Teal and Chocolate Brown

A new coat of paint is among the most inexpensive methods of changing the look of a living room. Chocolate brown and teal are both neutral colors that complement each other well when used in decorating. In a living room, the color combination is widely used to create a clean, modern space. To prevent the colors from feeling overwhelming, particularly in a small space, combine them with furniture and accents in more subtle neutrals.
  1. Solid Paint

    • Both teal and chocolate brown are neutral colors, meaning they will work with just about any color furnishing or accents. This family of colors tends to fade into the background, creating a cool, calming look. Both teal and chocolate brown might be overwhelming when used on all four walls of a living room, particularly if the space is small. To counteract these problems, it is best that the room have lots of natural and artificial light and that light or bright colored accents be used to break up the solid color. Adding these pieces will create texture within the space and make it more visually appealing.

    Accent Walls

    • A good alternative to four walls with a single color is to add an accent wall. This can be done in a number of ways, including three teal walls and a brown one. It can also mean that two walls are painted in teal while the other two are covered in chocolate brown. This is more visually appealing than an all-solid color, but also requires being well accented to keep the tones from feeling overwhelming. In rooms that are short of natural light, add a few mirrors and lamps. The mirrors will reflect the existing light, giving the appearance of more light, and they will make a small room feel larger.

    Lighter Neutrals

    • Lighter neutral paint, particularly white, cream and beige, are a good alternative to using chocolate brown or teal paint. These shades will create a lighter, more open feel that is ideal for small spaces and are less likely to feel overwhelming in the space. To continue the chocolate brown and teal décor, use a wall border, art work or other accents in these tones.

    Geometric Patterns

    • No matter the base color, adding a geometric pattern to the walls will bring a bit of visual interest to a living room and can be used to create a focal point. Squares, circles, lines and stripes are all excellent options. Apply the patterns in teal and brown if the walls are painted in a light color, or contrast a brown base with blue accents.
