Trim & Roof Combinations

Roof selection is among the most important decisions when designing a home. It must be aesthetically appealing and be able to withstand weather conditions. This is one purchase with a high price tag, and as such careful consideration will reduce the risk of costly repairs or replacements. You can choose from a variety of colors for the roof and trim, and several techniques can aid in selecting the combination.
  1. Selecting Colors

    • Roof and trim color should be selected based on the desired look of the home and what color is present in the elements of the home, including brick, stone and siding. It is ideal to keep the roof color neutral, including shades of white, gray, brown, beige and taupe. Those shades that will work with most siding colors, and won’t clash if repainting is done. Most manufacturers of paint, siding and roofing will provide color swatches, which will aid in decision making before any purchases are made.

    Light Colors

    • Light-colored siding is ideal for making a small home feel and look larger. These tones, including shades of white, cream and beige, will soften harsh architectural lines and work well with neutral or dark colored roofing. Combine white siding with a medium brown or dark gray roof and a medium color trim in either brown or gray for a simple, neutral look. White or beige siding can also be paired with a brick red roof and linen colored trim for something a bit more dramatic and visually interesting.

    Medium Colors

    • Medium colors either as siding or as a roofing color will create a warm look for a home and will work with just about any style architecture. These shades include medium grays, mossy greens, blues, some browns and stone colors. The key to making these colors work is to combine them with light or neutral colored roofing to add some contrast. Select trim that is a shade or two darker for a clean, monochromatic look, or select a dark trim for a dramatic look. Combine a medium gray roof and white trim with mossy green or stone gray siding. A medium-brown roof and white or tan trim will work well with tan, blue or mossy-colored siding.

    Dark Colors

    • Dark colors are ideal for adding a dramatic touch to the exterior of a home. Siding and roofing colors with a dark tone often feature natural colors, including forest green, brick red, smoke gray and watery blue. The key to pulling off dark siding is to contrast it with a neutral roof color and light trim. Alternately, a dark roof should be accented with a light trim and neutral or medium toned siding. Combine a black roof and white trim with smoky gray or brick red siding. Dark brown roofing with tan or linen colored trim will work well with a sandy or moss green siding.
