How to Choose Color Schemes for Moroccan Living Rooms

Decorating a living room in the Moroccan style means that you're embracing a rich color palette. The style takes its inspiration from the Moroccan landscape --- the deserts, the rough rocks and the brilliance of the sunset, as well the blues and greens of the Mediterranean Sea, all count as the most important influences on the style. Moroccan decorating uses all these colors together without reservation. However, the place where each color is used is generally fairly specific, although some exceptions do exist.

Instructions

    • 1

Familiarize yourself with the colors of Moroccan decorating. Blue stands above the rest as the style's main color choice. Colors rich as jewels such as emerald green, soft pink, sunset red, mauve and orange augment the blues of Mediterranean, along with earth tones such as terracotta, umber and olive.

Take your color cues from decorative items such as Moroccan pottery or the floor rugs and stained glass that find their way into many Moroccan homes.

    • 3

Paint an accent wall. In Moroccan decorating, the walls, stairways and any columns in a room usually feature colors such as oxblood, rust or emerald green. An accent wall is one wall that you paint a different color from the walls around it because you want to make it stand out; interior decorators like to hang photo or art galleries, mirrors or sconces on an accent wall.

Look for tile for the floor; usually earth tones or shades of blue are the most popular for this. Although you may not want tile throughout your living room, several spots in your living room offer a place for you to show off some terracotta or blue tiles with Moroccan geometric designs. These include the front entryway, which often doesn't have carpet. The area in front of the fireplace is another place where you might lay down some tile.

Create a decorative border for your walls, using stencils. In Moroccan decorating, stencils give you a chance to add dashes of color to your living room. This gives you a way to introduce decorative patterns, a feature that figures prominently in Moroccan decorating. Use the rich colors of jewels for your stencil colors.

Paint your furniture. Deep reds, rich blues and yellows are common paint colors for furniture. To add to the Moroccan feel, consider adding geometric stencil designs on the furniture as well.
