Three basic colors make up the patriotic-themed kitchen: red, white and blue. Choose colors that fall within these shades if you don't want to make the room style so literal. Blue shades include blue-gray variations while reds may include soft rose or burgundy. White shades may include off-white, light gray (almost white) and whites with a blue undertone. Keep the kitchen looking fresh and spacious by painting the kitchen walls with white and using the red or blue for trim and accents. If you plan to use a lot of decor, keep the space from looking too busy by using a neutral paint on the walls and cabinets.
Dress up plain walls by using stencils or patriotic wallpaper. Look for stencils with a star or flag pattern, and use stencil paint to create red, white and blue stars or dress up an American flag. If you're using stencils, use a white paint on the walls to keep the kitchen from looking too small. Also, when using white paint for the stencils, choose a shade slightly darker than the wall to help it stand out. Dress up the walls with light-colored wallpaper with miniature flags or other patriotic design.
Incorporate a variety of materials into the space to give it a personal feel. Choose hardware for the cabinets in materials like brushed or tarnished metal for wood knobs and hinges, or look for vintage glass cabinets or doorknobs and handles. Swap out contemporary light fixtures for rustic hanging lanterns in a colonial style or punched tin fixtures.
Complete the space by adding a variety of accessories to the kitchen. Hang red or blue curtains to complement white walls, or look for a material that has miniature flags or stars to hang instead. Purchase denim seat cushions to add to the dining table chairs, and cover the table with a crisp cotton cloth. Hang photos on the wall in weathered, wooden frames, or choose wall art that complements the design of the space.
