How to Decorate With Denim and Lace

Opposites often attract even in home decor, such as with denim and lace. When mixed together successfully, the two materials can balance a room shared by a rugged person and a soft, feminine person. Alternatively, denim and lace can show off the softer side of a cowgirl. The way you use the materials in the room will determine whether the denim and lace can coexist in your room in harmony.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint the walls a light, neutral color such as beige or ivory if you plan to use a lot of denim throughout the room to avoid making it too dark. Create an accent wall using blue paint with a faux finish to look like denim if you want something different. Alternatively, hang a wallpaper border that looks like denim along the middle or top of the walls. Add lace appliques to the faux denim walls if you want.

Use white or wood furniture to ground the room and balance the denim and lace. Sprinkle in some denim and lace. For example, cover a sofa or chairs with a denim slipcover and drape a lace doily across the back, or place lace covers, runners or doilies on tables.

Include denim and lace linens to establish your theme and add visual interest and texture. For example, use cotton sheets, a lace dust ruffle and a denim comforter on a bed. The sheets can be any color that you like if you incorporate it throughout the room as an accent color, such as white, pink, blue or yellow. Use denim place mats over a lace tablecloth or add lace doilies on top of the mats for a dining room. Hang lace curtains with a denim valance.

Decorate your walls with images, artwork or material that includes denim and lace. For example, frame a series of pictures and use denim as a mat. Cover the frames with lace or add a lace border to the denim mats. Pictures might include horses, cowboys, stars, horseshoes or fields of wildflowers.

Accessorize the room with bits of denim and lace. Make throw pillows out of old denim, then add a lace border or use lace to create initials or patterns against the denim. Cover a lampshade with lightweight denim material and add a lace border.
