How to Paint a Dish

Dishes, such as platters and plates, often look drab and ordinary with their simple or color-free designs. If you wish to add colors or a specific pattern to a dish, you can paint it with enamel, glass or acrylic paint. Since most paints are not safe for human consumption, you may wish to paint a dish you intend to use for decoration. However, you can find special paint designed for dishes that you want to use for decoration or for eating food either online or at an art store.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the dish with warm water and soap. Dry it with a dish towel.

    • 2

Dip a cotton ball or clean rag in rubbing alcohol and wipe the dish with it.

    • 3

Open a jar of paint and squirt it into a paint holder. Use nontoxic paint designed especially for cookware if you intend to use your dish for eating food. Use enamel, glass or acrylic paint if you intend to use the dish as a decoration.

    • 4

Tape a stencil to your plate if you wish to paint a very clear, specific design.

    • 5

Dip your paintbrush in paint and run it across the dish until you have painted the entire area. Dip the brush in water to clean it and add any other colors you desire.

Allow the paint to dry for several hours and remove the stencil.
