Beach House Fabric Colors

Relaxing color schemes and natural materials make the beach home style perennially pleasing. If you have decided to go with the beach look, then you can choose from several decor styles. Most beach themes begin with a neutral, natural or pale color scheme, and the fabric used determines the overall style and brings ocean living into your home.
  1. Minimalist

    • Sand dune-inspired colors for drapes and soft furnishings.

Minimalist beach style is spare and neutral. Choose color and fabric that provide an elegant backdrop. Think of empty beaches and sand dunes -- plain linens and cottons in shades of cream, sand, beige, pale blue and light olive green work well. Pick heavily textured waffle fabrics for bed throws. It is a good idea to select a range and stick with it throughout the house, thus giving the impression of harmonious tranquility.

    Seaside Vacation

    • Use bright fabrics to remind you of days spent at the beach.

Seaside style is wonderful if you have children in the house or simply want a young and breezy look. Select bright, vibrant fabrics, reminiscent of deckchairs and Victorian piers. Plain fabrics are deep-colored primaries -- red, blue and golden-yellow. Tablecloths made of vinyl printed with starfish, cushions with appliqued ocean motifs and boldly striped curtains teamed with white sheers all promote a cheerful day-at-the-beach feeling.

    Cape Cod Style

    • Cape Cod style has pale colors with bright accents.

Cape Cod-themed decor is focused on natural wood furniture and flooring. Fabrics are based around a pale blue and white scheme with occasional surprising accents, such as cobalt or cherry red. Hard-wearing canvas makes a good choice for dining chairs. Sheer white panel tab-top curtains teamed with slatted blinds and pale cream or aqua sofas promote a cool and airy Cape Cod atmosphere. Bed linens are crisp and white, warmed with heirloom quilts.

    Nautical

    • Nautical themes lend themselves to bathrooms and children's rooms.

Create a nautical style by selecting fabrics with ocean-going motifs; anchors, sailor hats, lighthouses and ships are typical nautical prints. Set them off with navy blue, red and white, plain and stripes. Nautical themes work really well in bathrooms and children's rooms as there are so many playful ways to accessorize.

    Tropical

    • Light fabrics in a tropical beach theme keep interiors cool.

Tropical decor is all about giving an impression of a cool interior as a respite from exterior heat. Fabrics are light and sheer wherever possible. White, cream, yellow and turquoise will remind you of the Caribbean. Keep pattern to a minimum, but a leafy print on sofas and loungers will echo the encroaching tropical plant life. Use white muslin mosquito nets in bedrooms with white linens and towels to offset the abundant honey or dark-colored wood that is typical of a tropical scheme.
