How Can I Decorate a Living Room With Dark Cherry Couches?

Dark furniture, such as deep cherry couches, can be a challenge when decorating a room, especially if you want to make your room feel light, spacious and airy. Sometimes, it's not possible to go out and buy all new furniture, however, and you need to work with what you have. Or you love the understated elegance of dark cherry. Fortunately, you can make your dark cherry couches work in virtually any living space as long as you have the right decorating tools and know-how.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a paint color for your main walls in a complementary color to the couches. Complementary colors, or opposite colors, lie across from one another on the color wheel. Red and green are complementary, so go for a muted shade of lighter green, such as sage.

    • 2

Select another paint color with the same tones as your cherry couches, such as a soft burgundy. Paint one smaller wall in this color to tie the couches into the room.

    • 3

Bring in accessories that tie into the first paint color. Choose cushions, lampshades, tablecloths, artwork and more in varying tones that match the complementary color.

    • 4

Add a few accessories with contrasting colors, such as ivory or soft oranges and yellows. These accessories should be bolder, with graphic prints or patterns, and used sparingly.

    • 5

Break up the darkness of the couches with a few scatter cushions. Combine both the complementary and contrasting cushions for a finished look.

    • 6

Place the couches in front of the wall painted in reddish tones if you want to camouflage the furniture. If you want your cherry couches to be a focal point in the room, place them against the lighter walls so they stand out.
